Family History

For more than 150 years, The Mackey Clan, has been rooted in Sandhills of South Carolina. This particular branch of the Mackey tree, are the descendants of David Mackey and Christine Steward Mackey.

The patriarch of this lineage, David Mackey was born in 1895 to Samuel Green Mackey and Janie Harvey Mackey.  Janie Harvey married Samuel Green Mackey in 1884, when she was 19 years old and he was 21 years old.  Samuel Green Mackey died on June 29, 1914 in Lancaster, South Carolina at age 50. Janie Harvey died on February 5, 1925, in Lancaster, South Carolina, when she was 59 years old.
Samuel Green Mackey had eight children with Janie Harvey (b. May 1865 on a plantation near Mt. Carmel).

  • Thomas Mackey (b. April 1890)
  • William Mackey (b. April 1894)

  • Sallie Mackey (b. 1897)

David Mackey served in the military on August 23, 1918, in Lancaster, South Carolina, when he was 23 years old. David Mackey died in August 1968 in Heath Springs, South Carolina, when he was 73 years old.

Christine Steward Mackey, the family’s matriarch was born in 1897 to Sarah Johnson Steward and Moses Steward.

Together, Christine and David Mackey had the following children:

  • Janie Mae Mackey-Powell (b. 1929)
  • Lula Francine Mackey-Drakeford (b. 1931)
  • Walter “Preach” James Mackey (b. 1934)
